What is the Rubist Society?

The Rubist Society is: An organization which believes a solution to climate change exists in nature and must simply be adapted to human technology and economics, thus resolving the climate crisis. The name “Rubist” is derived from the element in nature that has inspired this climate solution, an enzyme called Ribulose Bisphosphate Carboyxlase Oxygenase, or RuBisCO for short. This enzyme is the most abundant protein on the earth and is part of the process of photosynthesis, which uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (CO2) to make usable fuel in the form of glucose. This fuel powers the natural biological ecosystem of the earth, in analogy to the way fossil fuels such as gasoline power the modern human economy. The critical difference is that nature takes its carbon from the CO2 in the atmosphere as its source, whereas human petrochemical energy is taken from deep underground reserves. This critical difference creates the imbalance of carbon that is causing CO2 to build up in our atmosphere, gradually warming our planet and threatening human civilization. By modeling our economic activities on the sustainable model set fourth by nature in the ecosystem, humans can create a sustainable energy economy that has room to grow with the human population without having a cumulative detrimental effect on the climate. Because this topic is so complex and multi-faceted, we have broken the specialities of this project down into several sections below. As the sections will show, there are still many unsolved problems in achieving this goal of stopping climate change. We hope that this letter has been informative and helped to paint and optimistic and achievable picture of humanity in the near future. We hope to engage other passionate climate activists and share this narrative with a wider audience to help make this vision a reality. We would also like to thank our friends at Digamma Consulting for hosting our splash page in the early stages of our environmental project.

What form will the Rubist Society ultimately take?

Although the project is still in the early stages, thoughts on the nature of this organization are a natural question. At this time we are envisioning a collaborative group of scientists and other academics to help outline the steps necessary for a viable carbon-neutral energy economy. This may involve the development of new technology, and researching existing and emerging solutions, as well as steps in implementation from both an economic and political perspective. Although an informal think tank at this time, the organizational structure is an important choice in achieving the groups stated goal.

What skills is the Rubist Society looking for?

Because this issue is so large and multi-faceted (literally a global issue, geographically as well as intellectually), collaboration across fields is necessary to achieve success in discovering and implementing a viable solution. We have outlined the specializations that we foresee needing at this time, to help assist those passionate about climate change to best see how they may fit in to this collaboration.
